Here is our full interview on YouTube (in Hindi).
The Journey to Becoming a Mountaineer
Suraj and Surya never imagined they would become professional mountaineers. Their journey began with an innocent love for the mountains, which eventually turned into a passion. Their first treks—such as Chopta Tungnath—left a deep impression on them. Over time, they pursued formal training at prestigious institutes like the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), completing courses in basic and advanced mountaineering, search and rescue, and more. Today, Suraj Pawar runs his own adventure company, ‘HI Alti Tour Agency,’ while Surya Rawat leads 'Trexeonation', both organizing expeditions for enthusiasts eager to experience the thrill of mountaineering. Most Memorable Expeditions
When asked about their most unforgettable climbs, both recalled incredible adventures. One of the most exciting was their winter trek to Roopkund, a trail known for its extreme conditions and rare expeditions during the colder months. The journey was a spontaneous decision, filled with unpredictable weather and thrilling camaraderie. Another standout memory was Surja’s climb to Mt. Gangotri 1, a daunting 6,672-meter peak that tested his endurance and mental strength.
The Challenges of High-Altitude Climbing
Mountaineering is as much about mental resilience as it is about physical endurance. Climbers face numerous challenges, including severe weather conditions, altitude sickness, logistical struggles, and the difficulty of managing group dynamics. One of the most dangerous incidents they encountered was during a trek in KGL when a client suffered from severe altitude sickness. They had to act swiftly, providing immediate treatment and ensuring her safety overnight.Another harrowing experience occurred at Ghiya Vinayak Pass, where an unexpected thunderstorm at 5,100 meters forced them to camp in extreme conditions. The situation became even more nerve-wracking when a sudden fire broke out inside their tent due to a cooking accident. Thankfully, their experience and presence of mind helped them navigate the crisis safely.
Training and Preparation for Expeditions
Before any major expedition, preparation is key. According to Suraj and Surya, the most crucial aspect of training is mental readiness. While physical endurance can be built over time, mental strength determines how well a climber can cope with unexpected challenges. For high-altitude expeditions, climbers must be equipped with the best gear, including insulated clothing, harnesses, ropes, anchors, and ice axes. Technological advancements have significantly improved mountaineering equipment over the years, making expeditions safer and more efficient.
Common Mistakes and Risk Assessment
Beginner climbers often make mistakes such as ascending too quickly without proper acclimatization, which can lead to altitude sickness. Staying hydrated, maintaining a steady pace, and listening to one’s body are essential practices for a safe climb. Risk assessment plays a major role in decision-making during expeditions. Factors like terrain, weather patterns, and team coordination must be thoroughly analyzed before embarking on a challenging trek.Advice for Beginners
For those looking to step into the world of mountaineering, Suraj and Surya recommend starting with small treks before attempting advanced climbs. Some beginner-friendly treks in Uttarakhand include:- Dayara Bugyal (Uttarkashi)
- Kedarkantha (Uttarakhand)
- Brahmatal (Chamoli)
- Har Ki Dun (Uttarkashi)
Once comfortable with beginner-level trekking, aspiring mountaineers can enroll in basic mountaineering courses to build essential skills.
Future Goals and Expeditions
Looking ahead, Suraj and Surya have ambitious goals, including summiting Mt. Satopanth (7,050 meters) in the Gangotri National Park. Additionally, they aim to complete challenging passes like Kalindikhal, Auden’s Col, and Lamkhaga Pass. These expeditions will test their skills further and bring new adventures to their mountaineering journey.Final Thoughts
Meeting Suraj and Surya was an incredible experience, offering deep insights into the world of professional mountaineering. Their passion, dedication, and resilience are truly inspiring for anyone looking to explore the majestic Himalayas. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned trekker, their journey proves that with the right training, mindset, and preparation, the mountains are yours to conquer!
